Zach Britton injury update: Orioles closer (Achilles) could return Wednesday

The Orioles could receive a boost to their bullpen soon with the return of Zach Britton, who missed the start of the season recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Britton could be activated as early as Wednesday when Baltimore faces the Red Sox at home. Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Thursday Britton dominated on his rehab assignment, but the team hasn’t been tempted to speed up his return timetable.

If everything goes well, Zach will throw back-to-back on Sunday and Monday, Showalter said Thursday, via MLB.com. The earliest you could see him activated here is Wednesday. We have an off-day on Thursday; could be Friday. I’m just hoping the back-to-backs go well and he feels good.

I ask him questions all the time, I’m always in his ear, I try to be as professional as possible, he said.

Trubisky discussed the transition on Wednesday’s PFT Live from Mentor, Ohio, where he’s hosting a four-day youth football camp.

Speculation is Porter could fall to No. 9 because of his back issues that flared up last week and initially caused cancellation of his workout. (It was later held as scheduled.)

A source told The Post that Porter suffered from hip spasms. There was a report stating he had trouble getting out of bed — which he firmly denied Monday on CBS Radio.

My agent was very cautious, [it was] a little sore, nothing that serious, Porter said. There’s no risk of reinjury. There’s no risk as much people [as] are making it seem.

The ball was still floating in the air as Davis Webb announced the fate of the pass before it reached its intended destination.

That’s six! Webb exclaimed.

Who gets credit for Gregorius turning into basestealer

Romine’s career-best 11 game hitting streak ended while the Yankees were sweeping a two-game set with the Jays and his team-best average dropped from.373 to.344, but his game-calling again was stellar.

Romine did an unbelievable job, Gray said. I didn’t shake him one time. We were going in and out throwing pitches that I normally (don’t throw)… but I just got convicted in what he was putting down and threw it.

Romine, who is a lot like Aaron Judge when it comes to deflecting credit, played down his role in Gray’s success.

You’ve got to be able to read what’s working better than the other one per se, Romine said. Or if all of them are working, it’s just kind of flipping a coin. But I think we were primarily sticking with the (sinking) two-seamer and the curveball and we were able to sprinkle some sliders in there to keep it going.

Poyer had five interceptions, 95 tackles, 13 passes defensed and a touchdown in the first season of his four-year, $13 million deal with the team, but the 27-year-old has been around for half a decade, and it’s possible his career year came a season too late.

White had four interceptions, 18 passes defensed and a touchdown while making nearly $750,000 less than Poyer on average. The 23-year-old 2017 first-round pick made a similar impact for less money and has a higher upside, so he gets the crown.

This one was basically a toss-up between 2015 third-round pick Eli Harold and 2017 third-rounder Ahkello Witherspoon, both of whom have become solid young defensive starters on cheap rookie contracts for the San Francisco 49ers.

Witherspoon didn’t get onto the field during the first month of his rookie season but became a regular starter by November. Per PFF, he allowed a passer rating of just 66.4 between Week 13 and Week 16, and he didn’t give up a touchdown in coverage after Week 12. That probably indicates he’s on a better trajectory than Harold, who wasn’t a liability but failed to take a leap forward in his third season.

Goff with the Rams was forced to sit behind Case Keenum for the first nine games of 2016 despite the starter’s shaky play and cries from fans in favor of the rookie.

Once he got his chance, Goff’s seven games as starter in 2016 were shaky. Then LA went through a coaching change.

No, the early results for Goff were not good, and his sitting behind Keenum did not appear helpful at the end of the 2016 season. But the transition to new head coach Sean McVay that offseason led to a boom in Goff’s play in 2017. He now looks like the franchise quarterback the Rams hoped for when they drafted him No. 1 overall in 2016.

This one’s tricky, because Prescott, drafted in the fourth round, was not selected as the Cowboys’ franchise-quarterback-to-be. Incumbent starter and seasoned veteran Tony Romo’s preseason injury changed everything, and Prescott unexpectedly started Week 1 of the regular season.

It wasn’t until his second season, after Kyle Orton was benched, that Tebow mania arrived.

The Broncos were bad in 2010, and they were off to a bad start in 2011, too, until Kyle Orton lost his starting job to Tebow in Week 5. The Broncos won seven of their next eight games and won their division with an 8-8 record. Then came the famous OT win over the Steelers. Tebow mania was fun while it lasted, but Denver eventually moved on when it realize Tebow’s climax as an NFL quarterback had come and gone.

Newton was drafted No. 1 overall to take over the reigns Jimmy Clausen couldn’t handle in Carolina. There wasn’t much of a battle in camp … for good reason.

The Panthers’ struggle to win games in Newton’s first two seasons could point to a failure, but the one bright spot was his 2011 Offensive Rookie of the Year award. It took the team a few years to match the quarterback’s level of play, culminating in Newtons 2015 NFL MVP award.

Von Miller hosting another pass rusher summit

Broncos star outside linebacker Von Miller was grateful for the lessons he learned from his elders.

So he’s more than willing to share them with the Cheap Baseball Jerseys China next generation of guys who chase quarterbacks.

Via Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post, Miller will host another pass rusher summit next month in Branson, Mo. He hosted his first such event last year in California.

“It’s a great space where we can talk about knowledge and share knowledge,” Miller said. “It’s the only place where you can do that and where you can get [Oakland’s] Khalil Mack and [Atlanta’s] Vic Beasley in the same spot, other than the Pro Bowl, and talk about pass rush and what it takes to be a great pass rusher from a young’s guy point of view.”

African-American Newark mayor Ras Baraka has stated that cops aren’t the problem. They can’t solve the murders of black children, teens and young adults because of gang threats of more murder. We’d all take a knee to underscore and change that, no?

Thus highly public pregame demonstrations rub reasonable, caring folks the wrong way or halfway as based less in sincerity than in exploiting televised NFL games.

The Lions are spending another offseason trying to find a backfield mix that will give their offense the kind of balance it’s been missing for much of Matthew Stafford‘s run as the team’s quarterback.

Part of this year’s plan was signing LeGarrette Blount as a free agent after Blount’s bruising running style helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LII. That title came a year after Blount was part of a Patriots championship team and the Lions would certainly like to make a run like that this season.

No one’s going to pin all hopes on that front on Blount, but the chances of anything close to that happening would improve if he does well on the field. Running backs coach David Walker made it clear how he sees Blount doing that.

“Hopefully, he’ll give us a little bit more than we had last year,” Walker said, via the Detroit Free Press. “It’s one thing with 200-pounds of Ameer [Abdullah] or Theo [Riddick] running through the hole that you have to tackle. And it’s a totally different animal trying to tackle a 240-pound LeGarrette Blount. So we understand that hopefully will put a little bit more stress on the defense.”
